Why Sleep Is the Most Underrated Skincare Step

The science of overnight repair, and how to give your skin its best chance to renew.

There is a reason "beauty sleep" has survived as a phrase. While you sleep, your skin enters its most productive hours.

Repair happens at night

Cell turnover roughly doubles overnight. Growth hormone is released. Blood flow to the skin increases, delivering oxygen and nutrients. Cortisol — which thins the skin and weakens its barrier when chronically elevated — naturally falls.

The barrier remembers

Even one night of poor sleep can measurably weaken the skin barrier the next day, increasing water loss and reactivity. Over weeks and months, this shows up as dullness, sensitivity, and slower recovery from any treatment.

A simple ritual

Aim for seven to nine hours when you can. A clean pillowcase, a humidified room in winter, and a barrier-supportive moisturiser make a quiet but real difference. Avoid heavy actives the night before any in-clinic treatment.

Treatments work harder when you rest

Whether you are healing from microneedling, recovering from a peel, or simply maintaining a regular skincare routine, sleep is the multiplier. It is free, and nothing else replaces it.
